First Blog

Welcome to the Pokémon Paradise RPG blog! I’ve never written a blog before, so bear with me as I tell my story. Pokémon Paradise RPG was first online back in 2008 and 2009 when Justin Birdwhistle (Pidginhead) and a few friends decided to create an online Pokémon RPG. We all played Pokémon RPGs and wanted to make our own. We thought we could compete with some of the big boys like TPPCRPG and Eclipse RPG. Sometimes… you’re just not quite ready to play with the older kids.

For years, PokéPara always sat in the back of my mind, like an itch I couldn’t reach, or a bug buzzing in my ear that I couldn’t get away from. It haunted me. And in October of 2024, as fate would have it, the person I was working with ran off with our funding without paying me. Normally, this is horrible news, but… Alright, you got me, it was horrible news. I had worked very hard in building this thing and to have it stolen from me hurt a lot. I thought to myself, “What’s a better time than now to revive Pokémon Paradise?”

Luck has never been favorable to me, but there’s one thing, or person, I should say, that I’ve always had on my side and that’s my wife Alexis (MissBirdBrain). I’ve always talked about wanting to make a comeback and try again. She’s the game’s artist and designs the Paradise Pokémon that you can find in the game. With her support and guidance, Pokémon Paradise RPG is flourishing! At the time of writing this, we have 2,265 registered players.

If you’re still reading at this point, let me tell you what makes us unique and why you should play Pokémon Paradise RPG. A few features that I’m most proud of would be: unique Paradise Pokémon, the prestige leveling system, taking into consideration Pokémon IVs and EVs when compiling stats, our breeding mechanics, and our soon-to-be trading economy.

What are Paradise Pokémon? They’re hand-drawn Pokémon that you can find in the game. Some are limited editions like Paradise Spinda and Chatot, or holiday-themed like Halloween Murkrow and Christmas Snorlax. Others can be found in some locations like Paradise Pidove on Route 1, or Paradise Clefairy on Mt. Moon. New Paradise Pokémon are being added all the time. Our newest Paradise Pokémon, Spicy Pikadash, celebrates the Year of the Fire Horse. It’s only available from January 1st through February 17th, so you better get your hands on one soon.

Most other Pokémon RPGs don’t have level caps, and you’re probably wondering why we do. What’s the fun in that? There are a few things that make this fun and challenging. To prestige, you must collect gemstones that correspond to the Pokémon’s types and use them to power up your Pokémon. With each prestige, it requires more experience to level up your Pokémon, and you can gain five additional levels per prestige. For example, once a Charizard reaches level 100 and you prestige it, it will be able to go to level 105, and so on and so on.

A lot of other online Pokémon games only take into consideration base stats. We wanted to incorporate not only IVs and EVs, but also natures when calculating Pokémon stats. Our goal is to give players the full experience when playing PokéPara when it comes to maxing out stats. That leads us to our next feature: breeding.

One of my favorite mechanics of Pokémon was always breeding. Learning about IVs and how to pass them down, increasing shiny odds using the Masuda method, this was all so fun to me. Breeding the perfect Pokémon and sending them off with Wonder Trade (now Surprise Trade) was so much fun to me.

When it comes to trading and economics, a lot of Pokémon RPGs fall a little flat. When yearly events or mod giveaways are the only source of rarity in the game, it really deters newer players from participating in the economy. Along with limited events, all non-Paradise Pokémon have their shiny variant available at a rate of 1/512. That might seem a bit generous since it’s a lot better odds than the original games, but it’s just enough to allow newer players to find them and give them something to trade with. There’s also a 1/1000 chance that a Pokémon will be misgendered. For example, a Beedrill might be genderless, or a Miltank could be male. When you stack those two forms of rarity, you get a 1/512,000 chance of finding a shiny genderless Beedrill. With those odds, there’s always a chance to join in the trade economy.

Thanks for reading our first-ever blog post! It was a lot of fun writing this and I hope you learned a thing or two about Pokémon Paradise RPG. I look forward to working on the game and updating the blog. In the meantime, join us on our Discord server and offer your thoughts about the game. Maybe you have an idea to share or have funny memes. Whatever the case, we look forward to hearing from you!
